Nelson's Column    2 May 2008
The lack of updates have been due to a combination of being very busy at work, very busy at home, the odd technical glitch and me just getting out of the routine.
I meant to make the observation much, much earlier on how Brendan Nelson, leader of the Liberal Party (who sits in Federal Opposition since they lost the last election) was doomed as a leader by the way he handled official Federal Government apology around Reconciliation earlier in 2008.
First he complained it was happening at all.
Then he complained he wasn't being consulted enough.
Then he complained he didn't get to look at and approve the event schedule or the official wording of the apology.
Then he delivered an alternate apology as Leader of the Opposition that just made him sound cold and uncaring.
He (and his minders) should have realised the day wasn't about him. Instead, with all the focus on how apparently he wasn't being treated right, it just made him look irrelevant to the entire process. And the worst thing a new leader can look is irrelevant.
Although it probably beats chair sniffing.
Paper, Rock, Scissors ... and Water???    14 August 2007
My beloved wife was watching the Pepsi Max Paper Scissors Rock ad on TV recently and, in a casual way that didn't betray the upcoming mind-blowing surrealism, asked, "Paper beats rock, right?".
"Yes," I replied, not really paying attention. (I've found that saying "Yes" while not paying attention causes less problems than "No" in the long-term.)
"And rock beats scissors?"
"Yes."
"So what beats water?"
"... ??? water ??? ..."
After I'd recovered from my aneurysm, my beloved wife blamed the 'water' bit on older sisters who used to cheat and that she'd never questioned it until the moment I looked at her like she should be committed. Apparently the sign for water is remarkably similar to the sign for paper.
Fear Me, For I Am ... Death!    13 April 2007
... or so a meaningless internet quiz tells me. It's about the only time I've actually gotten a result worth talking about when I've wasted my life doing one of these things.
 | You scored as XIII: Death. Death is probably the most well known Tarot card - and also the most misunderstood. Most Tarot novices would consider Death to be a bad card, especially given its connection with the number thirteen. In fact this card rarely indicates literal death.Without "death" there can be no change, only eventual stagnation. The "death" of the child allows for the "birth" of the adult. This change is not always easy. The appearance of Death in a Tarot reading can indicate pain and short term loss, however it also represents hope for a new future.
XIII: Death | | 88% | VI: The Lovers | | 69% | XI: Justice | | 69% | II - The High Priestess | | 69% | IV - The Emperor | | 69% | VIII - Strength | | 63% | XIX: The Sun | | 63% | I - Magician | | 56% | XVI: The Tower | | 56% | 0 - The Fool | | 50% | III - The Empress | | 44% | X - Wheel of Fortune | | 44% | XV: The Devil | | 25% |

I'm Raising My Son to Be a Nerd, Part 1 of 678 988 372    12 March 2007
We went to the zoo a little while ago and I took my 2 year old son through the Nocturnal House. One of the animals we saw was a Ghost Bat, which was nice enough to fly around for a bit so my boy could see what that was like.
Outside, his mother asked him what he'd seen inside. His reply: "I saw the Batman!".
Sleep Deprivation    16 February 2007
Gil's been sick (and is now getting better) which means we've had little sleep recently.
How little sleep? Well, yesterday I didn't realise I went to work with my underwear on back to front until sometime mid-afternoon.
American Values, Unit-style    7 December 2006
So, I was watching The Unit last night, where the episode had the main male characters tortured as part of their SERE (Survival Evasion Rescue Escape) training. (The female characters just had to deal with if they loved God or not.) At the end of several days of beatings and psychological pressure, the main guys escaped, had to go back to finish the "game" and then everyone saluted the American flag.
Indoctrination, anyone?
Sheesh! Been awhile...    13 October 2006
I have many, many excuses for why I haven't updated this page recently. I bought a new PC that just kept crashing / freezing. I was away in Sydney / Melbourne for a week on business. Work's been very busy. My newest boy (name of Gil Harrison, by the way) has required some attention. A dog ate my internet connection (... not really).
Anyway, at least this is an update of sorts...
The Sandman Gives Me Time to Update    2 July 2006
It's only when everyone else is asleep that I have time to update this page... assuming I don't just play City of Heroes / Villains instead.
Chips Fried in Gold-en Oil    27 June 2006
Recently went to the Perth Convention Centre as part of an attempt to hold the world's biggest quiz night. If everyone signed in propertly, we would have had about 1350 people, which beats the old record of 1100.
What was a big talking point of the evening was the cost of chips - I took a photo of the menu that didn't quite come out, so I've modified it to show what the costs where on the evening.
Yep - at least $20 for a plate of chips and some sauce. Sure, you got a reasonable amount, but you'd pay about $5 for them at your local fish and chip shop.
Our team came about 28th out of 135 tables for the quiz night proper.
I Have Another Special Date to Remember Now...    26 June 2006
Not only am I the father of a new baby boy, I'm also the owner of a brand new computer. I shall call it Midnighter and its birthday will be June 26 every year. Happy Birthday Midnighter!
Of course I'm joking. Kinda. I won't remember it's birthday at all. As I told Bec, it's a guy thing.
I blame the lack of updates on account of time flying by. Tempus fugit and all that.
The Newcomer    8 May 2006
Little man came two weeks early (so four weeks premature) after the doctors decided my wife's blood pressure was too high and dangerous to her health. Good thing he's a healthy boy (3.175 kg / 7 lb) - both he and his mum are doing well now.
No names yet - we are still arguing about it.
Okay, So I WAS Going to Update Yesterday...    28 April 2006
... but left off an important step and forgot to update the online version of the index. But it's all fixed now.
Baby names: perhaps Cassidy, perhaps Caleb, perhaps Tynan, perhaps something else will grab us yet.
So, We've Moved    27 April 2006
We've mostly finished unpacking after moving into our new place. We've got more room, but less storage space. Hmmm...
Also, I was without broadband for a month. Longest damn month of my life. :-)
Puff'n'Stuff    8 March 2006
On I was right about Puff - Dominos came out with their Pizza Puffection ads not too long after my original entry. Makes the ads look even lamer. Hope the actors got paid well for going, "That's totally puff!" while keeping a straight face.
Other news: we're in the process of packing to move house. The new place will be bigger and better suited to Fynn and Boy #2 (we're going to name him after that Blur song). However, for the next few months, Fynn will have to sleep in a pink room. When he ends up warped, I'm going to blame my wife for it, because that was her call.
Puff-in' Loser!    31 January 2006
On TV there has been a campaign used to promote something called Puff. Had a look at the site - it's an attempt to introduce a meme into the highly-attractive-to-marketers youth demographic. Domino's Pizza is behind it as far as I can tell, so I'm expecting some Puff-crust pizzas with super-Puff toppings to come out at some point.
I'm sure that some people will fall for it, but it seems like a very clumsy way to try and manipulate a group who are reputedly very suspicious of marketing unless it hits exactly the right note. Puff doesn't hit that note imo.
Headless Children Sell Clothes    30 January 2006
Apparently they do, given the models used to sell children's clothes in David Jones.
Due to Overseas Demand    27 January 2006
Since those of you overseas wanted an update, an update you shall have!
My wife is pregnant again, it's another boy and she's due in late May.
Other than that... same ol' same ol', I guess.
Barbie is Three Superheroes in One!    3 November 2005
When walking around a while ago, I came across some versions of Barbie as Barbie Batgirl, Barbie Supergirl and Barbie Wonder Woman. No, I don't usually go looking at Barbies, but these were in a special pile with other toys. No, I don't play with dolls. Unless they are HeroClix, which are tough and manly and stink of healthy violence.
Anyway, besides thinking they should have released Barbie Oracle and completed the set, it was slightly appalling to think that DC sold the license for what are strong female characters to be turned into yet more fodder for the Barbie stable. Then I remembered that DC had also licensed Catwoman to be turned into the movie "Catwoman"... so perhaps Barbie isn't such a bad deal after all.
I Hate The Pogues    2 November 2005
Our drunken deadbeat neighbours have been gone about two months, but they have left behind a lasting legacy - I hate The Pogues. Not that I was a big fan of their folk cross funeral dirge cross irish ballad style anyway, but when you've heard the same damn album played time after time after time with someone (or someones) drunkenly singing along to it in a flat and off-key way, well, hate might even be too weak a word.
I've officially given up on trying to write a guide to City of Heroes because a better one that does the same thing already exists. CoH continues to be a great game, and with City of Villains just released, I look forward to what the future holds for it. If only they'd release the damn thing officially in Australia.
Bucky Gunts    19 October 2005
My wife and I cracked up laughing during the Emmys when a man called Bucky Gunts won the Outstanding Directing for a Variety, Music or Comedy category. Bucky Gunts! It's a name that is so wrong yet sounds so right.
Here's his IMDb link to prove I'm not making this up.
Stresstresstress    26 September 2005
August / September were big months, with some interstate travel for work purposes and lots of presentations to do.
I was too swamped to update. Sorry to my legion of fans. Yes, you.
It's the President's Fault!    7 August 2005
The other thing that's really eaten into my time has been "The West Wing" - we've borrowed several series from my sister-in-law and have been watching them in large quantities. And the thing is... you can't just watch one! You have to watch two or three at a time!
And because I told some people about it: I've started reviewing superhero- and comic-related movies at Spandex Cinema. The reviews are long, so make sure you bring a packed lunch.
Busy Busy Busy    21 July 2005
How quickly time passes. I've haven't been updating this, mainly because I've been doing other things.
I've written a Jade Empire fighting guide that is up at Gamefaqs.com. To do this, I had to play Jade Empire through twice and a bit, which takes its time.
I've updated the Perth Pizza Project Reviews page to reflect the large amount of different pizza I have eaten in the past month. It's not healthy, but it beats cooking for yourself when you are sick.
After a couple of hundred hours in City of Heroes I've just reached lvl 25, which is the halfway point. Sure, I could progress more quickly, but I'd have missed out on some of the sights on the way. Plus City of Villains is due to go into beta testing soon, so I've been keeping a lazy eye on that too.
Plus then there's work, family, mortgages blah blah blah that take up valuable geek time. I now understand why Dad used to get up at 6am - we kids wouldn't let him sleep! Yes, it's a go go lifestyle I lead.
Not An Addict    8 June 2005
I love Brownes Light Coffee Chill. I drink about 3 x 600ml during the week and on the weekends my wife and I go through 2 x 1 litre containers of it. It's fantastic. If I don't have my Lite Chill, I feel like I haven't finished my breakfast.
But I'm not an addict. Honest.
A Question of Law    30 May 2005
Shapelle Corby's sentence was handed down recently and she got 20 years for having 4kg of marijuana in her possession when she entered Bali. Given the media-fanned flames, it isn't unsurprising that people are outraged by it all. God forbid a pretty girl who cries a lot gets a harsh jail sentence in a foreign country!
I believe that there is a good chance she is innocent and that the drugs were planted on her. But her defense - "those drugs aren't mine; someone else must have put them there" - is the same as every other drug courier who gets caught. Saying that there are baggage handlers smuggling drugs (even if some where caught on a different offence) and that's how they got into her bag is purely circumstancial. There's no hard proof of her side of the story, just a lot of small coincidences.
Having her legal team state (from the version we see in the media, anyway) that the police didn't do their jobs correctly and may have bungled the evidence may work in more progressive legal systems, but trying to argue points of process isn't going to go far with legal systems that have harsh and dedicated penalties aimed at stopping illegal drug trafficking. The judges may agree that the police could have done their job better, but they aren't going to acquit someone who is caught with drugs in their possession on those grounds alone. Combine that with the "it wasn't me" defence and of course things aren't going to go well for Miss Corby.
It isn't a matter of guilt or innocence; it's a question of law and what it requires for a finding. Here's hoping that the next time we hear some commentator say that the penalties for drug use should be harsher, people remember what has happened to Miss Corby and take a moment to reflect on it.
Leaky Observations    19 May 2005
God knows why, but the few times I've gone to the toilet in airports over the past twelve months, the urinals (or a number of them) are broken. Why are airport urinals so prone to failure? Do they get a lot more gum than other urinals? Used more? Just more prone to breaking?
   Melbourne
   Perth
Sure, you could ask yourself, "Who goes around taking photos of urinals anyway?", but I think you'd be missing my point.
Renovation Rescue - Amityville    7 Apr 2005
I was perusing posts about the upcoming "Amityville Horror" film and case across a link that purported held information about the Amityville case. So I went and took a look at the link. It's not bad, but hardly as definitive to prove one way or the other (despite the author's bias).
What I really got a kick out of was the Related Links, which was:
"Need to redecorate your house urgently? BBC Homes has oodles of tips on how to do it..."
Yes, because when I think of the Amityville Horror, I think of evil and demons and possession and how a nice fuschia throw rug would have really brightened up the place.
Full of Grace    14 Mar 2005
I really hate the fact that any achievement made by one Australian is then co-opted to somehow involve all Australians. It happens all the time and just makes me wonder exactly how insecure we are as a nation. Let's look briefly at the case of Mary Donaldson.
Mary Donaldson got picked up in a pub by a guy who just happened to be the Crown Prince of Denmark. She managed to stick around long enough to marry him and is now Our Princess Mary. Our Mary. Our favourite royal.
Except she isn't "our" anything. She's Danish Royalty and has no official function in Australia (except as an attractive clothes horse that sells magazines). I'm certainly not looking forward to the years of "our Mary" stories as she gets pregnant, has kids, becomes Queen of Denmark etc. The only thing worse would be for her to die young ala Diana, because that would just make her a permanent fixture on the cover of women's magazines in increasingly weak stories (eg "Inside: Ex-con Women Inspired by Our Mary's Life!").
I'm also nauseated by the Monarchists who point to her as an example of why Australia should remain a constitutional monarchy. If you are that hard up for reasons, you know you are in trouble.
Updated the Pizza Reviews page.
Debugging    14 Feb 2005
For as long as I've known, I've been a bit scared of cockroaches. Actually, a lot scared.
However, last night I realised that they didn't ick me out anymore. I've read about cockroaches and how harmless they really are, so maybe I've finally truly absorbed that knowledge, but I ended up picking up two from the bathroom (in two separate trips) and dumping them outside.
I still don't like killing them, hence the "dumping them outside" bit.
I've put up a new, shorter version of The Paragon Beholder up, since I've sorta missed doing it. I'm also considering creating a "Spandex Cinema" sub-domain on it and having it house my movie reviews. Maybe, if I can find time away from the legion of games I have to finish.
And happy V Day from someone who doesn't get it.
Donation Porn    24 Jan 05
One ugly yet-not-totally-unexpected thing that came out of the tsunami donations / charity events was the pure fascination with their dollar amounts. The tables that ranked the countries in order of who donated what amount. The splitting of donations by Western vs "Muslim" nations. The tut-tutting of countries who didn't give "enough". To me, it all had a very crass tone and style to it.
I'm not saying that charity is only done by people to feel good about themselves, although it sometimes is. To my mind, charity should be something that has a quiet nobility to it, something that was sadly lacking when the nightly news / papers / event planners / governments kept screaming figures at the top of their lungs (1! BILLION! DOLLARS!).
I will always remember my time spent working for a charity (it was two weeks doorknocking - let's not pretend I did a stint in central Africa or anything). People told me "my accountant donates for me" before slamming the door in my face, or just looked at me with pure irritation for disturbing them at home. It wasn't a totally pleasant experience (which came to a head when I was attacked by a small dog - it didn't bite me, but did ruined the jeans I was wearing!) and I think of it when people go on about "charity" and "goodwill" and all the other positive buzz words that have been attached to the relief effort.
I know that those who receive the charity don't care where it comes from, but it would be nice to see some sort of dignity attached to the collection of charity monies. It will also be interesting to see if donations to other charities will go down this year, with everyone thinking, "I've done my part by giving $10 to the tsunami appeal" so they don't have to do anything else for 2005.
The Buzzards of Christmas    24 Dec 04
At Karrinyup Shopping Centre there is a Christmas display that features angels hanging from the ceiling. These angels are attached to a motorised system that sees them fly in circles all day long. However, they seem (to me, anyway) to fly a bit too fast, and the circling just gives them the appearnce of holiday buzzards, flying overhead of weary shoppers, just waiting for someone to drop.
But then, I'm not very Christmas-sy in my outlook. For a season of Hope and Joy, Christmas just costs too much!
I've updated my Pizza Review and Breaking the Mold ... as well. Happy Xmas, such as it is!
Everyone Else Is Wrong    November 11 2004
I don't care what anyone says - giving political dominance to any one party is a stupid idea. Politics is the art of compromise, and if you don't have to compromise, then why would you? You'd go the whole hog and do what you damn-well like.
Two things I did enjoy about the recent, conservatively won elections in Australia and the US:
The combined talk of "mandates" that won't be abused or divide people, and the fact it was parroted by the media. Talk is cheap, you know?
The "nyah-nyah-nyah-we-won" from right leaning pundits. All the gloating makes me think that those guys didn't think they had a chance in hell of winning again - the unexpected victory being the sweetest, I suppose. Still, it irritated me to read page after page of smarmy back patting and talk about the end of the left / small 'l' liberals.
My fault for reading the "news" when I should keep myself safe in an echo chamber.
If the Liberals (big 'L' this time) win the next election, that's it - I'm taking my family to Canada. I can learn to love ice hockey if it means state and religion are kept separate.
Watching Governments Form; Disturbed by Children's Curtins    November 3 2004
I was hugely disappointed to see the Howard Coalition re-voted into Government in the 2004 elections, especially with an increased majority and control of the senate. In many ways, Australian politics has become a one-party country.
In my opinion, it was won less on the Howard Government's proclamations that it had created a strong economy than lost on the issue of whether Latham's Labor could maintain the current economic standard. So we are stuck with a Government who lies like a dog in bed, but we'll all have bread and circuses to keep us entertained. Great.
However, I'm hoping that the Howard Government falls over now that it has the power to do what it likes. Already the Nationals and Liberals appear to have different agendas they want to push through that I don't believe the general public of Australia wants to see implemented. The full sale of Telstra? The relaxation of media ownership laws? Only if there is competition. Given the previous actions of the Coalition, I don't believe they (or their backers) will want to see competition introduced. Here's hoping that the absolute power they now wield corrupts their support for 2007. And that they don't screw up the country too much in the meantime.
I'm currently watching the US election results state by state. Here's hoping for a Kerry victory, because another four years of Bush (who has never heard of the idea of separating church and state... or perhaps heard of ideas, period) would be disasterous.
On an entirely unrelated matter, I was in Ikea a while ago looking at curtins for Fynn's room. The picture below is of one set that filled me with a mix of amusement and concern.
You can pull the tails off those animals, and the bunny just disturbed me. What do I want to do - turn my kid into a animal sadist with an anal fixation?
We picked some aqua blue curtins instead.
Stealing Time    21 September 2004
Thus far, I'm still managing to steal some time on my hobbies, despite having a young son. This is good - I'd hate to become one of those boring people who can only talk about their kids. Currently, I can still hold adult conversations (well, talk computer games and movies anyway).
Don't think I've mentioned it on this site yet, but I have two columns on City of Heroes Warcry - A View from Atlas Park and Spandex Cinema. I get a thousand or so people looking at it each week, which isn't too bad imo.
Oh, and here's a bigger picture of Fynn, since someone complained that the other shot was too small:
Anyway, life is busy. All these cool things are coming out that I have neither the time nor the cash to get involved in. I don't mind this too much; it just means I have to make my decisions carefully in order to maximise my time. And not sleep. I'm staying up a lot later than I should (which is sad because 10.30pm is "too late") in order to get everything done.
I've update the Perth Pizza Project reviews page with some of the other pizza venues I've been to. This page has also been re-ordered with the pizza reviews now alphabetized by suburb.
Can't Update; Raising Child    8 September 2004
My firstborn and first son was born August 21 and this was the first opportunity I've had to update. Or remembered to. Or something.
Anyway, he was christained Fynn Nathaniel and was 3.4 kg at birth (7 pd 8oz for those who don't like metric).
I'm enjoying being his father, but sure wish he'd sleep through the night...
Carpet Of Doom!    21 July 04
I've mostly finished unpacking after moving house on the weekend. Yes, I now have a huge mortgage and a child on the way, so it's goodbye to my carefree days of bachelorhood... or something, since I don't think I've had too many carefree days.
Two things we did straight off the bat was to 1) paint and 2) get the awful carpet in the front room replaced. How awful was the carpet? Observe the low-res pic of it below, as taken from the kitchen:
If anyone wants ugly, funky/musty/weird-smelling carpet, it is now available in three still-ugly roughly-cut pieces. Get in while stocks last.
You'd Think I'd Be Able to Update This At Least Twice A Month    23/6/04
Well, that's my aim, but it rarely happens.
City of Heroes arrived in the mail and it's still a great game to play. Don't have the time I
want to play it, but that's something I just have to deal with.
The Start of Back-Breaking Debt!    2/6/04
Having already gotten married and gotten my former gf / now wife pregnant,
I decided to go for the trifecta - we've almost bought a house. Along with the sense of
ownership, this property will come along with a large mortgage too. So goodbye, things that
I enjoyed - comics, computer games, other hobbies (evil is still free though) - because
I'll now be saving money for the important things, like food.
Maybe I overstate the case, but it certainly feels like all the pleasures of life will
go shortly.
In other news, my City of Heroes Tourist Guide went as high as #4 on the PC charts at
Gamefaqs. Now, this may sound a bit arrogant (given
that the game itself probably had something to do with it) but my guide was the only one
on CoH, so it was the source of info for a lot of people. I love it when that happens! :-)
Currently working on a guide to Soldiers of Anarchy and hoping that my copy of CoH arrives
in the mail shortly. I'd bought it from Amazon.com, but it was held up due to computer error.
Have to say that Amazon has one of the best recoveries from service failure I've ever seen -
I got a long apologetic letter (that didn't seem to be a form letter) and $10 towards my
next purchase. Of course, I won't be buying anything from Amazon with it (given that $10
probably wouldn't cover postage) but it's the thought that counts.
Also saw We Will Rock You - the Queen-music musical - and thought it could be best
described as a lot of good Queen songs interrupted by some pretty ordinary British bedroom farce humour.
Fixing Past HTML Errors    26/4/04
Having got myself some new freeware HTML tools ( AceHTML 5 Freeware and CSE HTML Validator Pro v4.5 from the cover disk of a magazine) I've managed to fix up the CSS problems for this site when you look at it in Mozilla.
Given I've started to use Mozilla, these flaws were painfully clear to me. Things look better now.
This Blog Isn't Dead; It's Just Not Moving    22/4/04
I honestly have been writing updates for this site, but just didn't get around to putting them up. If I'd been more diligent, here's what you would have seen last month:
|
Busy, Busy, Busy    17/3/04
Let's see - at the end of this month is my wedding, my gf is pregnant and we are looking for a house to purchase. You think I've got time to update? :-)
Okay, I've been slack. I'm involved in the City of Heroes beta test which has been <**BLOCKED BY NDA**> and taken up some time. I've also finished off a bit of research about Massively Multiplayer Online Games (MMOGs) and await peer review and comments on how things could be improved.
A new issue of The Beholder is due out this weekend as well. So it's full steam ahead, I guess...
|
But in between it all I just didn't get around to it. City of Heroes is a great game (the NDA's been lifted so I can say that now) and I've written a review of it here. The little time I have had on the computer has been spent in Paragon City. However, launch is coming up and since I won't have a copy of CoH until it arrives from the US (thanks to Sundancer for offering to help) I'll have some time to update evilasahobby.org.
Oh, and I've written a Tourist Guide to Paragon City, which is currently up at Gamefaqs. Guess my guides to Soldiers of Anarchy and Project Zero will have to wait.
My Hands Smell Like Feet 29/1/04
Started doing some boxing training at my local gym. For my first lesson, the trainer brought out the communal everybody-uses-these gloves. They were cold and wet and by the end of the training my hands had that stinky foot smell that I promptly went home and revolted my gf with.
Have managed to update almost every page. New stuff can be found at Breaking the Mold..., Geekdom..., Perth Pizza Reviews and Game FAQs. Have also played around with replacing the title jpg with something else, but still haven't come up with one I like.
Back to Work 6/1/04
Holidays ended on Monday. Did I get time to update this
site properly? No! What a surprise!
One day. One day...
Still Slacking 28/12/03
I still haven't got around to updating other parts of
this site - in between work, Xbox playing time (and faq writing) and
updating the Beholder I just
haven't managed to work up the energy to do it. But I'm on holidays now
and will hopefully find the time to do so.
I've got a new mobile with built-in camera that I've been playing with.
Here is the view from my desk that I am now very familiar with:
Oh, and Merry Christmas, Happy New Year, etc etc.
Full-Fat Muffin and Low-Fat Coffee Milk
20/11/03
The above - my breakfast when I can get away with it
(which is more often than it should be). On the weekend a friend said he
goes to the gym three times a week so he can drink and smoke; I go threes
times a week so I can eat muffins and pizza and still fit my clothes. Go
figure.
Work is still relentlessly hectic and I seem to find myself less and
less on the computer which is a shame. Computer time I do get is absorbed
by surfing to my usual web haunts or game-playing. I've got two faqs I
want to write and not the time to do the exploration. There are a stack of
pizza menus on my desk for places I want to write up. *Sigh* I'm half the
geek I was (and in the distance you hear my gf's shout of victory).
I am currently running a Dust Devils game (using the Ronin variant
rules) that I'll post the notes up after it's finished. It's been fun but
I wonder how the players will react to the revelations to come. We'll see
;-)
Sink the Atlantic 8/11/03
All I can say is don't host with Atlantic.net. All I got from them is
slow service until I threatened to leave... and then a month later they
cancelled my account anyway! Slack, very slack.
Meanwhile, I've started a new job. Although I really should update
parts of this site, I don't know if I'll find the time.
But I will try, loyal readers.
Something for Nothing 27/9/03
I really did mean to update sooner, but I got sick with
flu and just couldn't be stuffed. As a measure of my illness, I took an
entire week off work and played absolutely no computer games. Not one. I
was pretty sick.
Still not entirely over it. Went to see Something for Kate last night -
had bought tickets as a gift for the gf - but didn't last past 10.30. It
didn't help that SfK were scheduled to come on at 11.30, three and a half
hours after the doors opened. There should be a law against that.
Other news - I am going to be moving jobs in the near future. No more
public service life for me; I'm off to the private zone.
Oh, my stuffed-up head. Stupid flu!
Finally! 7/9/03
After a long time Atlantic.net have finally got around
to getting this site working again after leaving their control panel
broken for so long (ie 2 months) that I've started asking for my money
back. I still might try. They haven't yet got the Beholder back up and working
but I have managed to reclaim the domain, which is something.
In short, Feature Price went out of business. The long of it can be
found in places like Feature-Price.info and in the
relevant forums at Your Host
Sucks.
I'll add some updates soon; haven't got the time now. Happy Father's
Day.
Evil... to the Maxx! 31/5/03
Finally got around to checking my Ziplip account (work
has changed the firewall settings on me and it doesn't like Ziplip) and
found out that Banished.org is back
up, albeit with reduced content. I've changed the info in the Name Dropping page to
reflect this. Oh, and I read the publication and enjoyed the pretty
pictures. :-)
Wrote a fighting guide for Enter the Matrix on the Xbox and have
has received a lot of emails about it. Glad people are finding it useful.
A new issue of the Paragon
Beholder is due next week, so I have to get to work on it. Coming up
with new ideas is hard! :-) Oh, and my webhost is apparently going through
some sort of meltdown, so I may have to shift. We'll see.
Have grown incredibly bored of Shadowbane so there was no way
in hell I was going to start paying for it.
Goodbye, Sub Rosa. Until the next game, anyway...
Positive Results Guaranteed! 20/5/03
The funniest thing I have read in a while (from this
Business 2.0 article on development of the Toyota Scion, a car aimed
at Gen Y):
"A bB was shipped stateside and parked at a Southern California rave.
Dehydrated from hours of dancing, partygoers filled out marketing surveys
in exchange for free bottles of water. When the music stopped at 4 a.m.,
Toyota had a stack of mostly positive responses about the bB from a crowd
of 18- to 24-year-old consumers. The respondents liked the vehicle's price
and quirky look, its spaciousness, the Toyota build quality, and the
option of a big stereo."
I'm sure you could put Hitler in front of a group of these people and
they'd give him a big hug too. Didn't anyone think about the condition of
the people at the rave? "Dehydrated from dancing"... that's gold!
In other news, I enjoyed the Matrix Reloaded. Nothing earth shattering
from a plot perspective, but it has the potential to be another great geek
trilogy.
Acquisition and Loss of Personal Property
6/5/03
Some good news and some bad news.
Good news: My gf and I have become engaged. What's that you say? This
isn't good news? That I am now trapped like a fly in slowly drying amber?
My gf has told me not to think like this and that it *is* good news. :-)
Bad news: We got broken into yesterday. Besides taking the jewelry,
cameras, etc etc they also took my Xbox! Oh, the bastards! All my saves,
lost forever! I'm also never buying a Mad Catz light gun again - the first
one broke in four days and the replacement got stolen (also after four
days). I think it's a plot from the Thrustmaster people to make sure I buy
their lightgun intead. The other things stolen are being used to pay for
this particularly intimate marketing scheme.
On a serious note, at least they were clean - we had very little mess
to clean up and there wasn't any vandalism, so thanks be for small
mercies.
barbie lingerie model and trouble 16/4/03
It's amazing what people will search for online and
still end up at The Paragon
Beholder. Someone got to my fansite by searching for "barbie lingerie
model and trouble" and I must admit to be curious as to *what* they were
searching for in the first place. The lingerie stuff doesn't surprise me,
but the "... and trouble" just strikes me as odd-ish.
Anyway, got my MMOG
Leaving Survey page up and have gotten some replies. Not yet at the
300+ I want, but I haven't done too badly. I'll have to spend a day
entering the data into a spreadsheet before I can port it across to SPSS
for analysis. I'll be interested in what the results turn up.
Updated Breaking the
Mold... with my Anna's Story rant. It's not something you can
cut and paste into your next English assignment but I am hoping that a few
classroom discussions get disrupted from the "Anna was a beautiful angel
until one fateful day..." rhetoric that dominates the book.
Riot for Peace 27/3/03
I've eaten more pizza than possibly healthy this week.
Enjoyed every minute of it though!
The war on Iraq is currently on and I'm just indifferent. Still,
perhaps if I were to riot
for peace I'd at least get some thrill out of it. Go students! Riots
will end the war!
Updated Perth
Pizza Reviews. I've seen the competition
and am frankly not impressed. :-)
Four Minutes to Eternity 16/3/03
Having thought to myself I should update for long
enough, I have finally gotten around to it.
My gf has food poisoning and spent the weekend either asleep or puking.
I've had better weekends, but it's given me time to improve my Dynasty
Warriors 3 skills.
I'm trying to get a group of friends together to play a mmog - I just
get sick of having to wander around trying to find a group. Currently I
can get 2 people for Shadowbane
Asia but am trying for a group of five. If anyone of the meager few
who read this page are interested, drop me a line.
Updated Name
Dropping with the links I waste my day away with. I've got some
content I've written, but it needs some polishing. Look for my critique of
Anna's
Story in the near future - I've never read a more annoying "say no to
drugs book" than this one.
No Time 1/3/03
If I didn't go to work, I'd get more done.
Currently in the Shadowbane
Asia beta test and enjoy what I've seen so far. Sorry Fung Wan Online but you are teh
sux by comparison.
Attempting to update The Paragon
Beholder as well today...
Still Advance 7/2/03
Haven't been able to get started this week... tired and
lack motivation. Every day I come to work I think, "I would get much more
done if I was at home," knowing full well if I was at home I'd be playing
on the Xbox or PC.
So many games to play - Silent Hill 2, Dynasty Warriors 3 (Xbox), Fung Wan Online, Throne of
Darkness, another game I'm meant to be beta testing if only they didn't
make me download huge patches every night (PC). Yet I'm stuck at work
where I have little to do and care even less about it.
I might feel better after the weekend.
Updated the Breaking
the Mold... page.
Holidays and Play-aways 3/2/03
Went to the Big Day Out yesterday and had a good time.
1200 Techniques were definitely the band of the day - I'm going off to buy
their album based on how good they were live.
Over the Australia Day weekend I had the opportunity to eat pizza, so
i've updated my Pizza
Reviews page.
Hopeless Search for Truth 20/1/03
The next issue of the The Paragon Beholder is up. It's a
bit of a timesink at the moment because I am updating the template each
and every time I work on the site. Once the templates settle down and I am
happy with them it should take less time to do.
Updated the Breaking
the Mold....
Un-inform 12/1/03
Still busy. Still haven't had time to properly work out
some updates for this site. Realised I used "mould" (the fungus) instead
of "mold" (the shaping structure) in my menu bar, which makes it mean
something totally different.
I've had a huge number of submissions to The Paragon Beholder so I'm putting out
a mid-January issue. Which means I won't be working on an update here for
a little while.
Another picture of online contemplation.
Busy 2/1/03
Christmas and New Year's Eve were really hectic, so I
didn't get to do any updates in that time. I did update The Paragon Beholder last night but
I've got two assignments due next week and two exams that I am way behind
in being ready for.
Once I've caught up on these I'll add some material to this site.
But due to popular request, a picture of me. Okay, only one person
asked, but still... a picture of me in repose.
I got into the Fung Wan Online Beta
Test and this is me in it. I'll put up a few more pictures at a later
date of me in action!
(I know this isn't me really, but who actually wants to see my rl block
head? Coming soon - gf pics!)
The Rules #1 14/12/02
Take your luxuries when you can - later doesn't always
come.
Sleepy Go Bye-Bye 10/12/02
Stupid me - I forgot to add The Paragon Beholder to my links
page. That's been updated. I also added material to the Geekdom... and Breaking... pages.
Up! 2/12/02
And finally, it is up.
My websites have gone live - both this and The Paragon Beholder have finally
found a web host. I'm happy to see it finally go up after some work and
much procrastination on my part. Now all I have to do is keep the updates
coming...
Updated the Geekdom.. page.
First Steps 31/10/02
After ages of procrastination and indifference, I'm
finally getting stuff built. Almost all sections will have stuff in them
that is new, so I won't go into it one-by-one here.
Have a look around. I intend to update semi-regularly, but let's see
how long that lasts ;-)
