| Notes: |
My favourite pizza place of the moment. They have a list of over 30 pizzas to choose from and you can also ask for your favourite combinations.
What sets Allegro apart from other places for me is that they do a good 'standard' pizza but also a great pizza that's different - the Beef Thai Curry is a spicy change to the norm while the Bolognese is a really tasty pizza built off some pretty bland sounding ingredients. The seafood pizzas are all great as well.
Allegro can be easy to miss when driving down the highway - it's attached to a restaurant which can also make it harder to see if you haven't been there before. Also, getting the 'good' pizzas (imo of good) often means you have to look towards the more expensive end of the menu. That said, I'm looking forward to going back in the near future. |

Marinara - Seafood, Mexican |

Large's are $12; Jumbo size pizzas are $27.90; Gourmet pizzas cost more |
| Notes: |
Another pizza place I'd driven past for a while that I decided to try. Mario's promises high quality
ingredients (the takeaway menu states they use "real ham not polony") and that they have "bigger pizza with
more topping than the pizza chain stores or it's free".
I'm going to have to agree with the "more topping" statement - the amount of seafood I got on the Marinara
was great! Both pizzas tasted great, with the Mexican being fairly spicy in just the 'mild' version.
Mario's also has a large number of pizzas to choose from, with a Gourmet section for those who need more than
traditional toppings. My only complaint is the price, which is a little high, but you do get quality for what
you spend. I'm looking forward to going back to Mario's to try some of their other offerings.

| Pizzas Consumed: |
Works, Margherita |
| Price Range: |
Two large pizzas are $17.90 pick-up or $20 delivered |
| Notes: |
Let's start with the positives: Pompeii Pizza's have a nice base. It's light, supports the toppings well and is pretty tasty.
But I won't be going back to Pompeii ever again, for the simple reasons of 1) they got our order wrong, 2) their Works pizza is terrible, and 3) my wife spent part of the night throwing up after eating it.
I ordered an extra topping on one of the pizzas and didn't get it, despite being told I had. That's not a deal-breaker - people make mistakes, and I could live with one mistake if everything else worked out fine.
But it didn't. The Works pizza smelled odd in the car on the way home and tasted odd too. Its biggest problem was that it was less of a Works pizza than a Ham and Pineapple. No sir, they didn't skimp on the ham. I've had good pizzas that use shredded ham as a basis for the topping, but this Works just overdid it. It wasn't helped by the limited number of other toppings on it - sure, there were some prawns, a few mushrooms and a reasonable amount of pineapple, but that's not a Works pizza in my book.
The Margherita was better, but it was still a bit bland. Still, this ordinary Margherita was light-years ahead of the bad Works in terms of edibility.
Finally, my wife spent part of the night throwing up after eating from Pompeii, and personally felt it was the Works that caused her to be sick.
We won't be going back. If you are looking for pizza in this neck of the woods, go to Mario's (on Walter Drive as well) instead. It's a bit more expensive, but about 1000x better in terms of quality.

| Notes: |
I love it when an unknown pizza place drops its menu into my letterbox. It gives me the opportunity to try a place I didn't know existed. Unfortunately, these experiments aren't always successful.
On the plus side for East End Pizza Bar, their pizzas look great and use fresh ingredients. For the Supreme and the Garlic Flatbread (which is a pizza base with garlic and oil on it), the first few pieces tasted good.
However, after a couple of pieces, the dominating taste became the base. There wasn't enough sauce or topping on the pizzas to take away from the feeling that all you were eating was pizza base. Also, the Margherita was pretty bland and needed at least some herbs to give it some flavour.
It's a pity that the pizzas didn't work out from East End - the place looks nice and the pizzas certainly looked appertising. |

The sister shop to Broadway Pizza, owned by the same people. Some of the guys behind the counter have been known to work at both, so I wasn't expecting any differences.
However, I thought Pizza On Cambridge was slightly better on the nights I went. The pizzas seemed less oily and the tastes a bit cleaner. Could have just been the nights I went, but Cambridge was preferable to Broadway.
On the down side, the store is a bit hard to see until almost too late when you drive past, so if you are looking for it keep your eyes open. |

I've driven past Magic Pizza for years and kept wondering "Is it
really magic?" Yeah, it's a dumb thought, but it's a name that also
asks for that kind of question.
Anyway, I had an opportunity to try it and I'm glad I did. The
pizzas are the traditional take-away style, lots of fresh
ingredients (well, they tasted fresh) and all in all very enjoyable.
I had half of each pizza for dinner and the remainder for lunch, so
I know it tastes good when cold as well as hot.
To nitpick, the pizzas are a little oily (lots of cheese) and the
seafood pizza is really just mussels and prawns as far as seafood
goes. Still, I'd go back as it was good pizza! |

Avenue Nine is a relatively new cafe that opened up. After driving past it for a little bit the opportunity came up to go their before seeing a movie.
The pizza range isn't huge, and the only one that appealed on the night was the Gourmet. Now, I'm writing this review a little while after the event, and the only things I can remember about the pizza was:
- The base was excellent - thin and crispy yet with enough dough in it to still be slightly chewy; and
- the only thing interesting about the topping was that it had anchovies that would give the other ingredients a kick... otherwise, the topping was pretty standard.
At some point I'll go back, but based off this one sample, the pizzas at Avenue Nine seem nice enough but nothing special.
My wife's steak, on the other hand, was delicious. |

| Notes: |
Ali has obviously set himself a challenge here, having opened his pizzeria in the same strip as the well-known and well-established Marco's. However, this place appears to have a good chance of success given for the following two reasons:
Firstly, the majority of its pizzas cost only $10 for a large (which is the only size they do). This makes them very good value.
Secondly, the pizzas themselves are very tasty, being woodfired and on a thin base. You don't get a huge quantity of topping on a pizza, with only a small section of toppings available on the menu, but they do make for a well-flavoured pizza in a more traditional Italian style.
It will be interesting to see if Ali's Pizzeria will be able to stick it out in its current position. It will be a pity if it can't since the pizzas it makes are well worth eating.

| Notes: |
Efes Cafe is another Turkish cafe that does pizza (or pizza bar that does Turkish food - take your pick). Unfortunately, it was a bit of a mixed bag in terms of pizza quality. It is pretty inexpensive though - we had three pizzas (plus garlic bread and drink) for $23.90 - so I can't fault Efes for that.
The BBQ Chicken was very worthwhile, with a lot of BBQ sauce and marinated chicken. Mexican Volcano was okay, with a sufficient amount of flavour to be passable (but I'd argue over the name 'Volcano' given the chilli was pretty mild). As for the Egyptian... well, it was edible, but wasn't something I'd ever order again. It was just so bland, so ordinary. The Egyptian was just a pizza I didn't want to eat.
When you get such a range of quality in pizzas (ie one you liked, one you thought was okay and one you would never have again) you question the overall ability of the place you bought it from. Was the Egyptian the exception, with most of the other pizzas being okay or better? Or is the BBQ Chicken the abberation, with the other pizzas being more the standard of the Egyptian? One day I'll go back and check by ordering three different pizzas, but I'm certainly not rushing to Efes to do it. |

| Notes: |
When we go to the Galleria to catch a movie, the wife and I try to get a bite to eat here. Although a little expensive if you pay full price, getting a pizza from Spaghi on a cheap night is well worth it.
All pizzas I've seen come with a good amount of topping and are very tasty to eat - the Caprino especially has a distinct taste thanks to the goat cheese on it. The pizza base is thin and doesn't dominate the flavour of the toppings.
I enjoy going to Spaghi as, although they don't have the greatest range of pizzas, the ones they do are enjoyable to eat and are generally something different to what would be given the same name at other pizza shops. Plus, Spaghi also do a fantastic tiramasu, which never hurts to have!
Update: Spaghi have closed at this location to apparently re-open in Floreat. Haven't tried them since they shifted, but plan to at some point.

Found this place by accident when looking for another (closed) pizza place. Pizza Bar On Glyde has a philosophy of hand-making everything and using only fresh ingredients. Their presentation is top notch - the pizzas look great.
They taste pretty good too, but are missing that extra "something" that would make them really stand out. Bases are of the thin dough type and can be quite crunchy. The menu is also a bit limited and contains some non-convential offerings that may turn off conservative pizza eaters. The option exists to choose your own toppings, but I can never be bothered to do this.
Still, it was definitely worth finding. Last time I went back it was closed for the holidays, so I hope it will be open on next visit.

| Notes: |
I've written elsewhere that I love it when a new pizza menu appears in my letterbox - it lets me know of places I'd never otherwise hear of. And in this case, it was great to find out where Aurora was!
As a sign of how good these pizzas are, my wife suggested buying them three times in the one week, which is unprecedented. (Admitted she was sick and didn't want to cook, but usually that means we get Thai or Chinese food.) It was her love of the Meat Lovers that drove her to give the order and I have to admit that it is probably the best Meat Lovers pizza I've had. The other pizzas have all been very good too, and the one time we tried the pasta we certainly weren't disappointed.
Two quibbles with Aurora: firstly, finding the place - it's on Scarborough Beach Road on a curve, so it's very easy to drive straight past it (look for the BWS liquor store - it's next to that); and the fact that it has no EFTPOS / card facilities, meaning you need to bring cash. Both of these are irritating the first time you go. However, all I can say is that the pizza is worth these small inconveniences. |

Given that for most of the week you can get $9 pizza, Caffe
Martino became a regular place for social gatherings which meant I
could chew my way through the pizza menu. Martino's serves the
traditional italian-style pizza on a thick-ish base which is cooked
in a woodfired oven. All the pizzas taste good, but I find by about
3/4 through a single pizza things start to taste too same-ish. This
generally doesn't happen if you are splitting pizzas between a
couple of people, but is worth mentioning.
Update: It's about two years since the original review and while I only occasionally go
to Martino's, I have noticed that the service has gone straight downhill. This might not be a problem
for you if you are sitting in the restaurant with friends, but I have waited up to 45 minutes for a
take-away pizza in recent times. This isn't good enough. Sure, the place is very busy, but if you
have to keep customers waiting this long, don't offer take-away. |

Been meaning to try this place for a while, but choose to do so when I was really, really sick.
Only had the Frutti Di Mare, but the menu has a pretty good selection to choose from. The seafood pizza was quite good with a reasonable distribution of topping, but... I was burping up the taste of it for two days after. Don't know if this was because I was sick or because of the pizza, but it soured the experience a bit.
I will be going back to trying something else and to see if the burping thing reoccurs, since I did enjoy the meal. |

WGP are expensive for a reason - they offer high quality

different pizzas (eg Persian - pear, walnuts, cherry tomatoes and
prosciutto) that sound like they won't work, but do.
WGP are served on a very thin base and cooked in a wood-fired
oven. They offer a good range of seafood, vegetarian and meat
pizzas, but if you are the kind of person who only ever orders
Hawaiian or shudders at the thought of leek on pizzas, this probably
isn't the place for you.
My big gripe is the price - you can easily blow $50+ if ordering
more than two pizzas. It *is* worth it though. |

Been a while since I've eaten here... {nostalgia back to uni
days}
I honestly though this place was called Broadway Pizza, but that
doesn't exist when I look it up. I'll fill in the above details
correctly once I've been back to swipe a menu.
- Okay, got a menu; it is called Broadway Pizza, but for some
reason comes up as Pizza on Wheels on the Yellow Pages site.
Broadway Pizza have always done great Friday night pizza. Using a
medium thick base they manage to offer a good number of different
toppings which generally aren't skimped on. On the night in question
I wasn't that impressed by the Garlic Chicken, but enjoyed the
Seafood and Works. I *really* liked the slice of Meatlovers I had
(bbq sauce makes a huge difference) but it was oily / fatty enough
to turn the box translucent, so one piece was enough.
On my next trip through I had the Broadway and Queen Margherita
(one of the gourmet pizzas they serve). The Broadway was great and
the Q. Margherita pretty good, but, in the words of my gf, "tried a
little too hard" and mixed up too many flavours to be great. Worth
eating once though to see if you like it. |

One of Nedland's pizza institutions, Chelsea Pizza does gourmet
pizzas and other such italian goodies. I used to eat there
occasionally when at uni and always enjoyed it.
I did enjoy it on a recent trip there and its always nice to go
to a pizzeria where you can buy decent desserts or even a salad to
go with your meal.
All in all, the biggest thing is the value of the pizza - at $17
(about) each, you don't get the best value for money at Chelsea - a
lot of the basic pizzas can be bought cheaper elsewhere.
However, this shouldn't stop you from going. They have a good
range and I haven't tried their new gourmet selection. This
selection is more expensive, but more exotic than the main board.
I'll post an update once I've sampled some of them.
Update: Had the Blue (blue cheese, capsicum, artichokes and mushrooms)
and the Lamb (onion, sweet potato, pumpkin and lamb) and enjoyed
them a lot. I think the more expensive pizzas are worth buying over
the 'normal ones' and it's only a difference of a couple of dollars,
so why not? |

| Notes: |
After our initial attempt at ordering pizza from one place failed since they were closed for the public holiday, we ended up ordering from Beachcombers. The pizzas we got were alright, but nothing great.
In each case the pizza that was ordered was exactly what you'd expect, with no surprises or anything to differentiate it from any other pizza place out there. The Marinara and Chicken & BBQ Sauce could be seen as perhaps a little light-on in terms of topping, but they were still tasty. This is another pizza place that does it bases thin, which tended to leave the pizza pieces a bit floppy in the middle and crispy on the outside.
Beachcombers' pizza was fine, and I don't have anything to complain about in terms of their pizzas. However, I really don't have anything to recommend them for either. You could do worse than Beachcombers, but you could also do so much better. |

I really enjoyed the Portefino and Contadina, but the Margherita

of these pizzas is also very thin and does a great job of keeping
the focus of the toppings' flavour.
Still, it is very worth going here. If you are going to eat in

Many Turkish bakeries sell foodstuffs that resemble pizzas (called pide) and calzone (called borek). However, Istanbul Kitchen sell a limited range of pizza on top of their boreks and pide, so they qualify for review here.
The Turkish pizza was the only pizza consumed on this night and was thoroughly enjoyed. It is topped with marinated minced meat and vegetables (although I had trouble seeing the vege's!) and has a wonderful tang to it. The base is thin turkish bread dough, which makes for a fantastically light crust.
And on top of making a tasty pizza, Istanbul Kitchen also give you a lot of it! The pizza is a rectangle in shape, cut into smaller rectangles to fit into the box. After eating quite a bit of it one night, I still have a reasonable amount left over for lunch the next day.
I'll be coming back here in later weeks to try out their other pizzas.
Update: Ordered a number of pizzas to feed a cult movie night, so a number of different pizzas were chosen. All of them were very much enjoyed, with people commenting on the distinct taste of the marinated meats used on the pizzas. Also, the price was very good, given that I paid slightly more than $10 a pizza. Next time I have to cater for a number of people, pizza from the Istanbul Cafe will certainly be considered.

The pizza base is quite thin and closer to pastry than bread in
texture. Although the toppings are usually pretty simplistic (ie a
small number of ingredients) they are well chosen and complement the
ingredients' individual flavours very well. All in all I've enjoyed
every slice of pizza they served me thus far and look forward to
going back whenever possible.
Update: Looks to have changed it's name (and possibly owners). I'll have to retry this venue at a later date. |

Looking for a late night (well, 9.30pm) meal, I managed to get to La Tosca before it closed. I'm glad that they were still open, because the Portofino they provided was a great Italian style pizza. It had a great taste due to the herbs and fresh ingredients that were used to make it while the base was thin and crispy.
The one complaint I had was that the large pizza really isn't that big. I know that this sometimes happens with hand-made and rolled doughs, but it was really only big enough for one person to eat. You wouldn't really get much of a meal out of splitting a large pizza from La Tosca!
Still, I'll be going back to try some of the other offerings - La Tosca offered me a quality Portofino and I want to see if they can improve on it in future purchases. |

| Notes: |
Specialising in pizza al taglio (pizza by the slice) Delizioso makes a more traditional Italian style of pizza, with only a few toppings on each pizza type. The base that is used is very, very good, being both crispy and light, and is very well suited to letting the flavour of the toppings come through.
All of which means that you better know what topping you like before buying a slice, or else you'll be stuck with something pretty bland. From the types I tasted, the Mushroom Trio and Chicken, Olives and Mushrooms were very good, the Mix Vegies was okay and the others were pretty ordinary. Especially the Salami - a few pieces of salami on a slice of pizza doesn't really offer anything exciting.
With that said, these are potentially quality pizzas and really do have an excellent base. I'll be going back at some stage to try out some of the other types and see how they turn out. |

Plastic franchise pizza. They have a couple of seafood pizzas on
the menu and that is always a good thing. Their range is also better
than a lot of other franchises which is also a plus. Tastes good
too. My preferred take-away pizza for when it has to be
plastic.
Update: I don't buy Domino pizzas anymore due to funding that the Domino's CEO allegedly provides
to pro-life, anti-gay, right wing groups. It's a personal choice and has no links at all to the quality of
the food they provide. |

Pizza Haven has made the only seafood pizza I've ever not wanted
to eat. It takes a special kind of mediocre to make me want to stop
eating pizza of almost any description, and Pizza Haven have it in
spades. The Vegetarians' Choice was pretty bland and I can remember
nothing about the Extra Supreme. Bad plastic! Seek food from
elsewhere.
Update: A friend had a number of Pizza Haven vouchers, so I got to try Pizza Haven's
wares again. Okay, they weren't terrible, but they were very, very bland. When even the chillis are bland, you know there are problems! |

Plastic pizza. The quality does depend on the store you order
from (I've found Shenton Park to be better than North Perth, for
example) but this is pretty much standard franchise fare. Pizza Hut
do have an all-you-can-eat deal if you eat-in at one of their
restaurants, but gorging yourself on their food loses its appeal 1)
once you are over puberty and 2) when you see the limited range of
Supreme, Extra Cheese and Vegetarian pizzas being groped and put
back by grubby eight-year-olds. This is standard "want something to
eat but don't want to make it" fare.
Update:I don't think Pizza Hut has any more restaurants - they are now called "Nero's". They still have those small take-away shops littered around Perth though. |
